About
the Wiarton Steppers Club
Our
Callers:
Lorne & Cecille Lockrey
have called for the club since its beginning in 1981, teaching
both Squares and Rounds.
The
Club:
On
Monday nights people come from far and wide come to join in
on the fun and to learn modern square dancing with the Wiarton
Steppers. The Wiarton Steppers Square Dance Club attracts
regular club members from Tobermory, Sauble Beach, Owen Sound,
Port Elgin and many points in between.
Our
dances consist of Beginners, Mainstream and Announced Plus
Tips, with Rounds in between.
Dance Caller Lorne Lockrey is marvelous at teaching newcomers
a few basic moves early in the evening, allowing newcomers
to look talented and feel good about their moves on the dance
floor. We've also got several long time members who are great
at helping newcomers learn how to square dance. With just
the right mix of patience and care they'll give an encouraging
nudge or a friendly whisper to keep everyone going in the
same direction.
The
club was formed in January 1981 by 3 enthusiastic couples,
the Tyndalls, Nixons, & Goodyears. Together they started
dancing at the Wiarton Community Center with 13 squares of
new dancers. Through
the years, the club has danced in several locations in Wiarton,
including the public school, the high school, Salvation Army
Hall, and now at "The Meeting Place".
Over
the years, Theme Nights have become our most popular events
including
a square dance festival ("Steppin' Out 84"), hosted
a premier Ontario dance with "The Red Boot Boys"
from Tennessee, entered floats in local Christmas parades,
entertained at area nursing homes, danced at summer outdoor
festivals, and hosted many SWOSDA monthly dances.
Many
years ago the club had in their possession an albino groundhog
(this is Wiarton, after all!). It was donated to the town
of Wiarton for its annual Wiarton Willy Groundhog Day festival
. The new mascot was presented to the town at a summer dance
in Bluewater Park, with TV and Press coverage - helping showcase
the club.
